The idea of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ teams can frustrate some fans, but remains a very used term, and is still probably a valid turn of phrase when assessing the reach and worldwide fanbase of the club’s in question. On the pitch itself, there’s plenty of arguments for removing Tottenham and Manchester United from that term based on their Premier League form this campaign. The other four sides grouped in the ‘big six’ are Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea.
In recent seasons, there have been plenty of other Premier League clubs challenging that hierarchy, with both Newcastle and Aston Villa qualifying for the Champions League in the past two seasons. Nottingham Forest or Bournemouth could also repeat that feat this term. Among the other 14 Premier League clubs there are many other top players, and at Transfermarkt, we have compiled the most valuable Premier League XI from players outside of the ‘big six’ clubs. It makes a very strong side.
Between the sticks is Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen with a market value of €25m. He beats Villa’s Emiliano Martinez (also worth €25m) as he is the Argentine’s junior. Comprising the back three are Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi (€45m), Newcastle’s Sven Botman (€45m), and Nottingham Forest’s Murillo (€50m). The two central midfielder are Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães and Villa’s Amadou Onana – worth €80m and €55m respectively.
In attacking midfield is Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze (€55m), with the Magpies Anthony Gordon (€60m), and Aston Villa’s Marcus Rashford (€55m) on the wings. Rashford is the only player on loan from a ‘big six’ team in the XI. Then leading the line is Newcastle’s Alexander Isak (€75m), and Villa’s Ollie Watkins (€55m). In total the XI has a combined market value of €600m.
