With the Champions League round of 16 now almost concluded, we already know four of the teams that will head into the quarter-finals (Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan & PSG). Arsenal also have one foot in the last eight after beating PSV 7-1 in Eindhoven, while Lille vs Borussia Dortmund looks perfectly poised at 1-1. Aston Villa will be huge favourites to progress after winning 3-1 at Club Brugge, whilst everything it to play for in the Madrid derby at the Metroplitano. Since the European Cup converted to the Champions League back in the 1992/93 season, which teams have dominated Europe’s top competition? Real Madrid will be hoping to extend their dominance with a win against Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid – Carlo Ancelotti’s team lead 2-1 from the first leg at the Santiago Bernábeu.
At Transfermarkt, we have compiled the all-time Champions League table since 92/93 to determine which teams have got the most points. Knockout games have also been included with three points for a win and games that went to extra-time being counted as a draw and therefore awarding a point to both sides. It makes for an interesting list of teams and highlights the effect clubs have had on UEFA’s top club competition in recent decades. Five Premier League sides make the top 20.
Unsurprisingly, leading the way are the ultimate Champions League kings, Real Madrid. The 15-time winners have accrued as many as 658 points since the 1992/93 season from their 328 matches in the competition. They are 50 points clear of any other team. In second are Bayern Munich, who breezed past Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16 – the Bavarians have 608 points from 306 games. In third are Barcelona with 603 points from 305 matches. Manchester United take fourth place with 445 points from 228 games in the Champions League.
In fifth position come Serie A side Juventus, who crashed out to PSV in the play-off round, with 399 points from 230 games. They are followed in sixth by Chelsea – the Blues have 356 points from 197 matches. In seventh position are Porto – the first non top-five league club – with a total of 353 points from 228 games. Eighth position goes to AC Milan with 340 points from 207 games. In ninth are Arsenal with 330 points from 196 games, while completing the top 10 are Liverpool with 301 points from 162 matches.
