It was a special afternoon for Leeds United at Elland Road on Easter Monday. Daniel Farke’s men demolished Stoke City 6-0 to all but secure their return to the English Premier League. Leeds will gain automatic promotion if Sheffield United fail to beat Burnley in this afternoon’s late-kick off at Turf Moor.
Burnley will move level with Leeds United on 94 points if they beat Sheffield United and secure their automatic return to the top-flight under Scott Parker. Joel Piroe was the hero for the Yorkshire side with four goals in the first half to push him in first place in the race for the English Championship golden boot. But there was also a special moment late in the match when Farke handed a debut to 16-year-old Harry Gray.
Gray is the younger brother of Tottenham Hotspur star Archie Gray, who moved to the North London giants from Leeds last summer. The Gray family have a longstanding legacy at Leeds with Harry’s grandfather Frank and great uncle Eddie both playing for the club and enjoying huge success. Young striker Harry has been making waves through his progression at Leeds’ academy and he’s arguably viewed as a bigger talent than Archie.
As the graphic above illustrates, Gray became the second youngest debutant in the English Championship this season behind Igor Tyjon of Blackburn. Gray has scored three goals in seven games for Leeds United’s youth team in Premier League 2 and he’s been capped by England at U19 level. Some incredibly talented youngsters have been headed their debuts before their 17th birthday in recent years, including Jobe Belligham and Chris Rigg, and Gray has an incredibly bright future ahead of him.
