Stakes couldn’t be much higher for the Madrid derby tonight at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid are involved in a thrilling three-way title fight in LaLiga with 16 games remaining. Despite a testing season, Real occupy top-spot with a one-point advantage over their city rivals with Barcelona four points off Carlo Ancelotti’s men.
Defeat in the Madrid derby wouldn’t be catastrophic for either side but a statement victory would provide a psychological advantage and bragging rights for supporters in the Spanish capital. Madrid suffered a shock defeat last weekend to Espanyol and they currently have an injury crisis in defence with Ancelotti resigned to deploying a makeshift back four. Atletico will travel across Madrid in excellent form with just one defeat in their last 21 matches and it’s poised to be a thrilling encounter. Some of the most recognisable names in football have played for the two Madrid giants over the years and we’ve collated both club’s most valuable XI’s in history based on Transfermart’s renowned market values.
Real Madrid’s all-time most valuable XI
Eight of Real Madrid’s current squad make the 16 times Champions League winners’ most valuable ever XI. The team’s total market value stands at an eye-watering €1.35 billion with Vinicius Jr – the current joint-most valuable player in the world – taking top spot at €200m. Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, Eder Militao, David Alaba, Rodrygo and Thibaut Coutrois are the seven other current players. Eden Hazard, Rafael Varane and Madrid’s all time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo are the other three stars in the team.
Atletico Madrid’s all-time most valuable XI
Conversely, only four current Atletico players make their most valuable XI of all-time with a total market value of €940m – almost €400m less than Real. Jan Oblak remains in goal but his value is now €75m lower than his record high of €100m in 2019 and Antoine Griezmann’s value has also dropped by €122m from his record high of €150m in 2018. Julian Alvarez and Mario Llorents are the other two current Atletico stars to feature. Premier League fans will notice Rodri’s presence in midfielder with the Manchester City the current Ballon d’Or holder.
