Each club ranked

The Premier League table is ultimately the only stat that matters at the end of the season. Clubs can focus on underlying stats or celebrate the performances of individual stars, but at the end of the day managers are praised or sacked and players are bought or sold based on the numbers of points their teams win in games and put on the league table over the course of the season.
However, while the season rumbles towards a conclusion, we can still break down the performances of each club and rate their individual performances in the league campaign. And, since Transfermarkt also tracks the market values of each players in the English top-flight, we can also use that as a yardstick to judge each Premier League club. So, based on the overall squad market values of each club, which teams are over-performing and punching above their weight and which clubs are simply not getting enough out of their star-studded squads?
Which teams have overperformed in the Premier League?
The club that has so far outperformed all others in the Premier League season is undoubtedly Nottingham Forest. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side currently sit third in the league table with the twelfth most valuable squad in the English top-flight. As such, our rankings put Forest top of the list with a score of +10. But they aren’t the only club to do remarkably well this season. Alongside Santo’s side are none other than Bournemouth and Fulham, who also sit on impressive and identical scores of +7. Andoni Iraola’s side are currently flying high in eighth place with the fifteenth most valuable squad and Marco Silva has managed to take Fulham up to tenth in the table with a squad that is fourth bottom of the list in terms of overall market value.
Other notable over-achievers are Brighton (+3), who are breathing down the necks of the typical top four contenders having picked up 46 points and currently find themselves sitting sixth in the table. They sit above Ipswich and Liverpool, who despite being at opposite ends of the table are out-performing their market value by two places. They’re joined by Everton, who continue to rebound in the league table under new manager David Moyes and are currently sitting one spot above where their squad’s market value ranks in the English top-flight.
Which teams have underperformed in the Premier League?
To no great surprise, Manchester United remain the most underperforming club in the Premier League based on the market value of their squad. Although Ruben Amorim will be given plenty of time to turn things around at Old Trafford, there’s no getting away from the fact that the Portuguese manager has a fifth most valuable squad in the English top-flight and due their 14th-placed predicament, their score sits at -8. However, they’re not the only serial under-achievers in the league this season and are joined by Tottenham Hotspur, who continue to struggle with injuries and form to the fifth-most valuable squad in the Premier League and also have a score of -8. Just above them are West Ham with a score of -6, who continue to struggle in the bottom half of the table despite recently changing their manager and appointing Graham Potter.
Just above the troubled Hammers are none other than Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who sits fifth in the league table with the most valuable squad in England and thus have a score of -4. They’re joined by Wolves, who should be doing better than their 17th place in the league table would suggest based on their squad market value, while Newcastle and Leceister City are doing slightly worse than the quality of their squads would suggest with an identical score of -1. Interestingly, five clubs currently sit on a score of 0, which suggests that the lieks of Chelsea, Aston Villa, Arsenal, Brentford and Crystal Palace are all doing as well as they probably shoud be in the league this season. However, it’s unlikely that each of their fanbases would agree with such a sentiment.
