The growing prevalence of agents in football across the last decade is well-documented due to the key role they play in transfer negotiations. The eye-watering finances involved at the top end of the football industry has led to agents receiving incredible fees for facilitating moves or contract extensions for their clients.

It’s a lucrative business as highlighted by the Football Association (FA) releasing the figures for how much English Premier League clubs have paid to agents during the 2023/24 season. Besides the three promoted clubs last season – Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United – only Brentford didn’t pay agents in excess of eight figures.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Chelsea paid more in agent fees than any rival Premier League club, after splashing out €87.9 million. The Blues have embarked on a crazy transfer spree since Clearlake Capital teamed up with Todd Boehly to buy the club in 2022. Chelsea have spent over €1 billion in transfer since the start of the 2022/23 and they’ve also paid significant fees to agents.

Manchester City rank second after spending €70.9m to agents this season which is more than €30m more than their city rivals Manchester United. Liverpool come in fourth (€36.9m) and there’s quite a gap to fifth placed Arsenal. Despite being classed among the traditional “big six” Tottenham actually spent less on agent fees than Aston Villa with Daniel Levy notoriously a shrewd operator.
