Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 384 Liga Portugal players and two names stand out: Viktor Gyökeres (Sporting) and João Neves (Benfica). Both have received upgrades and now rank one and two, respectively, at the top of Liga Portugal following the update. But whether either one will still be in the league when the 2024/25 season kicks off remains to be seen as both Gyökeres and Neves are being linked with a move to the Premier League.
Gyökeres had a remarkable season. The Swedish striker managed 29 goals and nine assists in 33 league games. “He also scored in the big matches,” Transfermarkt Content Manager Portugal Gonçalo Tristão Santos said. Gyökeres scored two goals in four games against Benfica and three goals in three games against Porto. “In other words, he’s a forward who doesn’t hide in the most important and decisive moments even against big rivals. Gyökeres was also very consistent throughout the season and never had long periods without scoring,” Santos said. Gyökeres saw his market value increase by €10m to €65m, just €5m shy of Liga Portugal record set by former Benfica star João Félix in 2019.
The next star at Benfica is João Neves. “He was, for me, the standout figure for Benfica in the 2023/24 season,” Santos said. “At just 19, he plays in a way that makes it seem like he has years of experience. He has established himself as a starter in the team and, at this point, no one questions his place in the starting XI. He is very versatile and can play as a deep midfielder and slightly further forward. Either way, he’s fantastic at regaining possession for his team and setting up plays.” Neves will represent Portugal at Euro 2024, and there has been talk that Manchester United would like to sign the midfielder. “I consider Neves one of the most promising midfielders in the world,” Santos said. That’s now reflected in his new market value, which has increased by 22.2% to €55m.
Liga Portugal market value update: Both ups and downs for Porto
Meanwhile, third-placed Porto has seen ups and downs as part of the update. While promising players like Alan Varela (+€10m to €35m), Evanilson (+€5m to €35m), Francisco Conceição (+€7m), and Pepê have seen their market values increase, Canadian midfielder Stephen Eustaquio is among the biggest losers. The 27-year-old midfielder saw his playing time decrease significantly during the second half of the season and, as a result, saw his market value decrease 21.4% to now €12m. Eustaquio will represent Canada at the Copa America in the United States this summer. This is seen as an excellent opportunity to improve his market ahead of the transfer window opening in July.
How the transfer market values work
The transfer market values are calculated taking into account various pricing models and a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market values are not to be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.
The aim is not to predict a price, but an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are given here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm ( for the detailed market value definition ).
