The war-chest handed to managers at the top level in modern football often equates to mind-boggling amounts of money. Bosses spend millions, sometimes even billions, trying to assemble the best squads available. But some managers are also very astute at bringing in money from player departures. Whilst modern managers are far-less involved in the actual dealings of selling a player, they are the ones who can develop stars and their market values to drive up the fees for buying clubs. With this in mind, let’s take a look at the managers who have made the most income from player sales this century.
Leading the way is none other than Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone. Across his career, this century, Simeone has accumulated as much as €1.25b from player sales. In second place is current Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola – the Spaniard has €1.12b of income from selling players since 2000. In third is Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini with a total of €1.06b from player sales. In fourth place is current Cruzeiro manager Leonardo Jardim – the Portuguese boss has accumulated €999m from player sales since the turn of the century. Current Fenerbahce manager José Mourinho is fifth with a total of €981m made from player sales.
Sixth on the list is Italian Massimiliano Allegri with €948m made from player sales from the former Juventus boss since 2000. Seventh place goes to Aston Villa manager Unai Emery with a figure of €925m. He is followed in eighth by Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti – the legendary Italian has accumulated €904m from player sales this century. In ninth position is current England manager Thomas Tuchel, with a total of €830m, and completing the top with €780m made from selling players is Portuguese boss Jorge Jesus.
