Top 5 leagues

With the Champions League and Europa League approaching their conclusions and May just around the corner, it’s certainly clear that the European football calendar is drawing to a close for another season. However, as both competitions can attest to, a lot can change in a short period of time over the course of one season. Some teams begin brightly and then fizzle out when fatigue takes hold, while others start slowly but gain momentum with each passing week. And in a number of cases, some of Europe’s biggest clubs have turned on the style since the turn of the year. So which clubs in Europe’s top five leagues have shown the most impressive form in 2025 thus far? Let’s take a look.
As we can see in the graphic below, which shows the top 20 most in-form football clubs in 2025 based on their average points per game from league matches, leading the list is none other than Paris Saint-Germain with a dominant 2.83 points per game, closely followed by Barcelona with 2.67. Coincidentally, both clubs have also performed admirably well in the Champions League and are considered by many to be the best teams in European football at this moment in time. Roma, Bayern Munich, and surprise package Strasbourg round out the top five, showcasing strong form in their respective domestic leagues. The Ligue 1 side in particular have enjoyed 2025 to date, losing just one of their last 14 league games, which is a far cry from their form in the first half of the season when les Bleu et Blanc won just three of their opening 14 league games.
The middle of the ranking includes well-known clubs such as Liverpool (7th), Inter Milan (8th), and Real Madrid (9th), with each team averaging around or slightly above 2.0 points per game. It’s perhaps a testament to the difficulty of the English and Italian top-flights this season that the league leaders of the Premier League and Serie A respectively have somewhat fallen off the pace they set in the first half of the season. Leverkusen are notable entries within the top six, possibly exceeding expectations compared to traditional European giants and performing admirably despite still lagging behind Bayern in the Bundesliga table.
When it comes to the Premier League, Liverpool still lead the way but it’s worth noting that title challengers Arsenal have clearly fallen off the pace set by their Anfield rivals. Not only have Mikel Arteta’s side averaged around 13% fewer points per game than Arne Slot’s, but they’ve even fallen behind Newcastle to be the third most in-form team in England over the course of 2025. And sit just above Aston Villa and Crystal Palace, who have averaged a very impressive 1.92 points per game since the turn of the year. Manchester City, who dropped as low as seventh in the league table mid-way through the season, have managed to improve since the turn of the year and now sit just two points off third place.
