The winter transfer window closed on February 3rd with English Premier League clubs finalising their squads for the final four months of the season. English top-flight clubs spent a total of €500.5 million on new arrivals with clubs recouping €170.3m from player sales. The biggest spending Premier League club was comfortably Manchester City with Pep Guardiola splurging €218m on new players.
City’s total spend was the second highest in the history of the January window with Omar Marmoush their most expensive signing at €75m. Elsewhere, Aston Villa had a busy window with Jhon Durán departing for €77m to Saudi Arabia and several high-profile arrivals including Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford. But which Premier League clubs gained the most market value across the January window, and which clubs lost the most? Let’s find out!
Premier League: Biggest market value winners from winter transfer window
Unsurprisingly, Manchester City’s squad increased in value more than any other Premier League club. City’s market value increased by €92m to €1.3 billion with Marmoush their biggest arrival while Kyle Walker was their most valuable departure to AC Milan. Tottenham rank second with an increase of €62.3m with Mathys Tel (€30m) and Kevin Danso (€25m) their two most valuable additions.
West Ham are in third spot with Evan Ferguson (€40m) joining on loan on deadline day and James Ward-Prowse (€16m) returning to the club after Nottingham Forest terminated his loan deal. 10 Premier League clubs added value to their squad in the January window, based on Transfermarkt’s market value.
Premier League: Biggest market value losers from winter transfer window
Conversely, nine Premier League squads lost market value based on our data – Fulham were the only club to remain the same. Chelsea’s squad lost the most value across the window due mainly to loan departures with Axel Disasi, João Félix and Ben Chilwell all departing. Manchester United rank second with their business causing severe frustration amongst the fanbase.
Patrick Dorgu was their only arrival while Rashford, Antony and Tyrell Malacia all departed on initial loan deals. Brighton rank third due predominantly to Ferguson’s loan departure to West Ham with Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest complete the top five. Fulham’s squad value remained the same across the window, but it did increase by €1m after Willian’s return but that was after deadline day.
