The scrutiny on football clubs’ finances has risen in prominence across recent years due to new financial rules being implemented. UEFA’S Financial Fair Play Regulations are intended to prevent clubs spending more than they earn and in England, the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) have severely limited clubs’ spending power.

Clubs must strictly adhere to the rules with Nottingham Forest and Everton receiving points deductions for their failure to comply. The importance of clubs generating revenue is as important as ever, whether through player sales, increased commercial or matchday income. Clubs are increasingly aiming to bring in money outside of match days and this approach will help them appease fans with new signings. But which clubs had the highest revenue during the 2023/24 season? Let’s find out.

On January 23rd, Deloitte – industry leading financial analysts – released the figures for last season in the 28th edition of their Football Money League. And Real Madrid have made history as the first club to generate over €1 billion across a single season. The Spanish giants won the European Cup for the 16th time but their financial success was stimulated by the completed renovations to the Bernabeu Stadium. Madrid generated €1.045b across last season, which was €209m higher than second placed Manchester City (€837.8m).

 As the graphic above illustrates, PSG remain in third place (€805.9m) with Manchester United (€770.6m) and Bayern Munich (€765.4m) completing the top five. There are six English clubs in the top ten with Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea joining the two Manchester clubs. The first Italian club to feature is AC Milan (€397.6) and they narrowly pip their city rivals Inter (€391m).
