It’s been over a week since the transfer window closed for clubs competing in the top five leagues. It was a hectic summer with clubs aiming to complete their business amid two major international tournaments but squads are now finalised – unless some high-profile fee agents are offered contracts.

The biggest transfer fee this summer was the €75 million that Atlético Madrid paid to Manchester City to acquire Julián Alvarez. There were only two other fees in excess of €60m with Dominic Solanke joining Tottenham and Leny Yoro moving to Manchester United from Lille. But which top five league clubs gained the most value across the transfer window and which sides lost the most value? We’ve analysed the rise and falls across the transfer window for top five league clubs – June 28th to August 30th – and it’s provided fascinating results.

The biggest market value winners from the 24/25 transfer window

The biggest transfer of the summer didn’t involve a transfer fee with Kylian Mbappé finally completing his move to Real Madrid after his contract with PSG expired. It was one of the most protracted sagas in history but it resulted in the Champions League holders’ squad market value increasing more than any other club. Their overall market value increased by €226 million to regain their standing as the most valuable squad in the world from Manchester City. Mbappe is the joint most valuable player in the world at €180m while Endrick – valued at €60m – officially joined and there wasn’t any major departures.

As the graphic above illustrates, Madrid’s city rivals Atlético rank second after a squad market value increase of €139.4 million. Alvarez, valued at €90m, was their most high-profile while Conor Gallagher, Robin Le Normand and Alexander Sorloth all joined the Argentinian at the Metropolitano. Southampton rank third after strengthening their squad after the promotion to the English Premier League while European giants Manchester United, AC Milan and Bayern Munich all feature in the top ten.

The biggest market value losers from the 24/25 transfer window

Perhaps unsurprisingly given Mbappe’s departure, PSG’s market value dropped the most across the top five leagues during the transfer window. The French champions’ market value fell by €102m with Manuel Ugarte and Hugo Eritike joining Mbappe in leaving Paris. PSG have abandoned their approach of signing established stars in recent years and their policy of adding potential stars of the future continued this summer with João Neves, Désiré Doué and William Pacho arriving.

Girona (-€79m) secured Champions League football for the first time in their history last season but they rank second after losing several star players, including Artem Dovbyk and Aleix Garcia. Manchester City (-€67m) and Aston Villa (-€65m) both rank in the top five. Alvarez’s departure accounts for City’s presence while Villa had a busy summer with Moussa Diaby and Douglas Luiz exiting and Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen amongst a number of new faces.
