This December, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 538 football players playing in the Turkish Süper Lig. As a result of the new changes, there were increases and decreases in the market values of many players. While there was no change in the market value of Victor Osimhen, who remains the most valuable football player in the Turkish top-flight, Gabriel Sara stood out as the second most valuable football player in the league. The player who gained the most value in the update was Galatasaray’s star player Yunus Akgün, while the player that lost the most value was Fenerbahçe’s Cengiz Ünder.
Following these updates, there was a decrease in the overall squad market value of every team in the league aside from Göztepe and Samsunspor. The teams that lost the most market value were Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş and Trabzonspor, respectively. Galatasaray, despite a loss of €1.2 million in value, retained its title as the most valuable team in the Süper Lig with a squad market value of €260.85m. Fenerbahçe dropped to €214.85m following a decline of €11.28m, while Beşiktaş fell by €10m to €129m. Trabzonspor experienced a €9m decrease, bringing their value down to €96m. On the other hand, Göztepe, who have drawn attention with their performances this season, increased their value by €4.5m to €40m, while Samsunspor rose by €3m to €31m.
Akgün with biggest increase, Sánchez thriving at Galatasaray
Yunus Akgün, who has had a successful start to the season at Galatasaray, saw his market value rise from €6.5m to €11m, reaching the highest valuation of his career. The forward, a key player for Okan Buruk in both European competitions and the league, nearly doubled his value with a €4.5m increase. If the national team player continues this impressive form, his market value could rise even further by the end of the season. The young talent has contributed 13 goals in 22 matches this season. Another player whose market value increased is Gabriel Sara. The Brazilian midfielder saw his value rise by €3m to €23m, making him the second most valuable player in the Süper Lig after Osimhen. Sara, who is under contract with Galatasaray until 2029, has contributed nine goals in 22 matches this season. With this new valuation, he has reached the highest market value of his career. Another Galatasaray player whose value has risen is Metehan Baltacı. The young player’s value increased by €1.2m, reaching €2.8m.
Meanwhile, defensive leader Davinson Sánchez saw his value rise by €1m, bringing it to €19m. The former Tottenham Hotspur star had to overcome a hamstring injury that ruled him out for two of Galatasaray’s first three league games, but since then he has been a vital cog in a team that has pushed to the top of the league table in the first half of the season as well as going undefeated in their Europa League campaign to date. When we couple that with two goals and an assist in his first 16 appearances, it points to the 28-year-old talent enjoying a strong season with the Turkish club. Sanchez’s new market value makes him the sixth most valuable player and the most valuable defender in the league.
Icardi and Oxlade-Chamberlain lost value after poor start to season
In terms of which players lost the most market value in the most recent update, Fenerbahçe winger Cengiz Ünder comes out on having seen his market value drop from €10m to €7.5m, having once held a market value as high as €35m. Elsewhere at the club, the market values of Fred and Sebastian Szymański have decreased by €2m each. Fred has lost value due to both his advancing age and his declining performance, while Szymański’s low scoring contribution has contributed to this decrease. Loaned players Allan Saint-Maximin has also lost €1m. It was a similar story at Galatasaray, where Hakim Ziyech, Mauro Icardi and Victor Nelsson all lost the most market value. While Ziyech and Nelsson’s lack of playing time was effective in their loss of value, Icardi’s market value fell due to his age. All three players saw their market value fall by €2m.
One of the more notable downgrades in market value came to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder saw his market value drop €700k down to just €2.3m, following a difficult start to the season that has seen the 31-year-old player pick up just three appearances and one goal for Besiktas so far in the current league campaign. The player’s new market value now means that Oxlade-Chamberlain’s value is at its lowest level since January 2021, when he was first coming through as a young talent at Southampton and just a few months before he would eventually make the move to North London for a transfer fee of €13.8m.
