Victor Osimhen is no longer the joint most valuable player in Serie A. As part of the Serie A market value update, the Nigerian striker saw his market value reduced, falling behind the unchanged Lautaro Martínez. Osimhen was one of 547 players update, and while the Nigerian dropped, Ademola Lookman (Atalanta) and former Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic (AC Milan) were among the big winners.
Lookman stole the headlines when he scored a hattrick to help Atalanta defeat previously unbeaten Leverkusen in the Europa League final (3-0). “He was the face of Atalanta’s Europa League title,” Area Manager for Italy, Jatin Dietl, said. “Lookman scored the decisive goal in the round of 16 against Sporting, produced a goal and an assist in the second leg of the semifinal against Olympique Marseille, and then scored a hattrick in the final. After playing a poor first half of the season, Lookman didn’t just help his team to win the Europa League and secure fourth place in the league.” Lookman has recently announced that he would like to leave Atalanta, and clubs in the Premier League might be tempted to sign a player with his technical and physical qualities. As a result, Lookman saw his market value increase by 33% to now €40m.
Also up to €40m is US men’s national team winger Christian Pulisic. “Pulisic had an instant impact in Serie A and, together with Marcus Thuram (+€5m to €65m), is considered a top transfer,” Dietl said. “Playing for Stefano Pioli, Pulisic has creative freedom and doesn’t need to get involved in defensive duties. His 12 goals make him the most dangerous winger in the league, ahead of teammate Rafael Leão. The expectations are that he will continue to play a central role under new head coach Paulo Fonseca.” Leaving Chelsea seems to have done wonders for Pulisic; since arriving in Italy, his market value has increased by an incredible €15m, reaching a level not seen since November 2022.
Serie A market values: McKennie up – Victor Osimhen drops by €10m
Pulisic isn’t the only American player with an upgrade. At Juventus, Weston McKennie saw his market value improve by €3m to now €28m. It is the highest market value in McKennie’s career. McKennie is one of the few winners at Juventus. Italy’s record champions played a poor second half of the season and despite winning the Coppa Italia saw their overall squad value drop by €31.5m to €458.7m.
While Lookman, Pulisic and McKennie are among the big winners, Osimhen has seen his market value decrease after scoring just 15 goals in 25 Serie A games. Indeed, this is his second market value decrease after the Nigerian already dropped from €120m to €110m last December. “His season wasn’t anywhere near the level of Napoli’s championship season,” Dietl said. “It isn’t just the goals but his performances overall. Perhaps his head was already with a different club because transfer seemed to be certain last summer. But his exit clause of €130m has seen interested clubs reject a potential purchase.”
Osimhen isn’t the only notable striker with a market value downgrade. English forward Tammy Abraham also saw his market value downgraded. The Roma forward missed most of the season with an ACL injury and scored just one goal in 12 games across all competitions after returning to the field. As a result, his market value dropped by €5m to now €30m.
How the transfer market values work
The transfer market values are calculated taking into account various pricing models and a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market values are not to be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.
The aim is not to predict a price, but an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are given here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm ( for the detailed market value definition ).
