The new Champions League format with its brand new ‘league phase’ kicked off last week. Fans are still getting used to the new set up with more teams and more matches than ever before. This Wednesday the Europa League will follow suit, as the same ‘league phase’ format begins in Europe’s second highest regarded club competition. Premier League sides Manchester United and Tottenham are among the favourites to lift the trophy in May, with the two sides having by far the most valuable squads in the competition at €857.35 million and €768.3m respectively.
Down the years, the Europa League has been a great breeding ground for strikers to showcase their goalscoring prowess. But since the re-format in the 2009/10 season, which players have scored the most overall goals in the competition? Here at Transfermarkt, we have compiled the list, with some top attackers of the past decade or so featuring.
Leading the way is Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with 34 goals in 62 Europa League games. He has represented five different clubs in the competition – Lille, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Barcelona and Marseille. Aubameyang was a runner-up with Arsenal in the 2019 final, as the Gunners lost 4-1 to London rivals Chelsea, and he was the competition’s top scorer and Player of the Season last term in the 2023/24 campaign with Marseille. In second place is Colombian centre-forward Radamel Falcao, who scored 30 goals in 31 Europa League matches. He lifted the trophy in 2011 and 2012 with Porto and Atlético Madrid respectively.
In third is Romelu Lukaku with 27 Europa League goals in 46 games – he was a runner up with Man United in 2020. Fourth goes to Athletic Club legend Aritz Aduriz with 26 goals in 39 Europa League matches. In fifth is former Red Bull Salzburg forward Munas Dabbur with 24 Europa League goals. He is followed by Frenchmen Kévin Gameiro and Alexandre Lacazette in sixth and seventh with 22 goals each, but Gameiro doing so in less games. Edin Dzeko is eighth with 21 goals, whilst Óscar Cardozo and Bruno Fernandes complete the top 10 with 20 Europa League goals to their names.
