Premier League market value update: Erling Haaland becomes world MVP, Cole Palmer hits €90m

This Tuesday October 1, the most valuable football league in the world, the Premier League, received 115 new market values, increasing its total value by +€167 million to a new total of €11.72 billion. Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland, Chelsea’s young talent Cole Palmer, and Aston Villa’s ‘super sub’ Jhon Durán were among the biggest winners in this latest update, whilst newly promoted Ipswich Town increased the most in market value as a club. At the other end of the scale Arsenal lost the most market value, whilst there was also four downgrades for Chelsea and Man City players and five for Manchester United stars.

Haaland received the biggest upgrade in this update, rising by +€20m to take his market value from €180m to €200m, and cement his place as the standout most valuable player in the world. There were also significant upgrades for Durán (+€15m to €35m), Brighton’s summer signing Yankuba Minteh (+€12m to €28m), Ipswich winger Omari Hutchinson (+€11m to €18m) and Palmer (+€10m to €90m). Other notable upgrades saw both Luis Díaz, Gabriel, and Kai Havertz rise in value by +€5m, to €80m, €75m and €75m respectively. The biggest downgrades went to Gabriel Martinelli, Matthijs de Ligt, Gabriel Jesus, Lucas Paquetá, and Matheus Nunes – who all dropped by -€10m in market value.

Erling Haaland becomes the world MVP at €200m

The biggest story of the update is without doubt prolific striker Haaland rising to €200m, leaving Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappé (all at €180m) behind as the world MVP. The Norwegian becomes just the second player in Transfermarkt history to hit €200m, after Mbappé achieved that feat back in 2018 whilst at PSG. Haaland has enjoyed a sensational start to the season scoring 10 goals in the first six Premier League games of the campaign. He now has 100 goals in just 106 matches for Man City since joining the Sky Blues back in 2022.

When Haaland first arrived at Man City for a transfer fee of just €60m in 2022, he had a market value of €150m. That rose to €170m in November 2022, and went up further to €180m in June 2023, where it had stayed until this October. The 24-year-old striker is now by far the most valuable player in the Premier League, with teammate Phil Foden the closest to his value at €150m. He has won the golden boot in each of his first two seasons in the English top-flight, hitting a Premier League record 36 goals in his debut season. It already looks like he will make it three in a row this campaign.

Palmer was second on the goalscoring charts behind Haaland with 22 Premier League goals last term in his first season at Chelsea. The 22 year old’s remarkable rise is reflected in his market value, as he now reaches €90m and becomes the joint sixth most valuable player in the world aged 22 or under. Palmer is also now the most valuable player at Chelsea and the seventh most valuable star in the Premier League. The mercurial talent scored four goals in the first half alone in the Blues recent 4-2 win against Brighton.

It was a mixed market value update for Chelsea on the whole with four upgrades to Palmer, Noni Madueke (+€7m to €35m), Nicolas Jackson (+€5m to €40m), and Renato Veiga (+€5m to €8m). Whilst Ben Chilwell (-€6m to €22m), Reece James (-€5m to €35m), Axel Disasi (-€5m to €35m), and Mykhaylo Mudryk (-€5m to €30m) all saw their market values drop in this latest October update. Their squad value went up +€6m as a whole, and means the Blues remain the third most valuable squad in the Premier League at €954.2m.

Jhon Durán second biggest winner of Premier League market value update

One of the stories of the early season has been around Aston Villa’s Durán and his mesmeric impact from the bench for Villa this term. He has scored four goals from six games – all of which have come as a substitute. His early season form, combined with a lot of interest in the summer, sees the Colombian’s market value rise from €20m to €35m, and make him the joint third most valuable striker aged 20 or under. Only Haaland went up more than the +€15m Durán received in this intermediary update.

Aston Villa saw their squad market value rise by +€20m to a new total of €615.45m with four players upgraded. As well as Durán, Morgan Rogers rose from €15m to €22m, whilst Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemans both went up by +€5m to take their respective market values to €60m and €30m. Four Villa stars went down with Diego Carlos (-€4m to €12m), Tyrone Mings (-€3m to €10m), Jacob Ramsey (-€3m to €32m) and Emiliano Buendía (-€2m to €20m) all receiving small downgrades. 

Gabriel Martinelli & Gabriel Jesus among biggest downgrades 

Arsenal were the only team from the update to see their squad market value fall by more than €10m, with a -€15m downgrade taking them to a new total of €1.16b, which still makes the Gunners the most second most valuable club in the Premier League. This was largely due to the Brazilian pair of Martinelli and Jesus both falling by -€10m, taking their new market values to €60m and €55m respectively. Both players are struggling to nail down a regular starting spot in Mikel Arteta’s side at present.

New Manchester United centre-half de Ligt also dropped by €-10m from €65m to €55m, following the Red Devils acquiring his services for just €45m in the summer. Nunes remains on the periphery of Pep Guardiola’s team (although that may change after Rodri’s long-term injury) and is downgraded by -€10m to €40m, whilst West Ham’s Paquetá also falls by -€10m to a new value of €55m. Other notable downgrades include, Bruno Fernandes (€65m), Darwin Núñez (€65m), Jack Grealish (€55m), and Kevin De Bruyne (€45m), who all dropped by -€5m.

Ipswich with league’s biggest rise in squad market value

Ipswich Town have enjoyed a remarkable rise, winning back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League under the astute stewardship of Kieran McKenna. They were the biggest winners from the October update, with their squad value rising by +€34.3m to a new total of €194.4m. However, despite the upgrade, they remain the lowest valued squad in the Premier League, with fellow promoted side Leicester the next closest with a €275.6m squad market value.

The Tractor Boys had nine players upgraded in this October update, including Hutchinson (+€11m to €18m), Liam Delap (+€7m to €15m), Leif Davis (+€6m to €15m), and Jacob Greaves (+€5m to €20m). The next biggest squad market value upgrade went to Brighton who rose by +€29m to a new total of €572.1m, with seven Seagulls’ players rising in value. Aston Villa (+€20m €615.45m) and Tottenham (+€19m to €787.3m) also saw their squad values upgraded substantially.
