Few Premier League clubs will need to ensure they do everything with perfect precision in this summer’s transfer window quite like Chelsea. Having recently appointed a new head coach in Enzo Maresca, the Stamford Bridge side now have to navigate the murky waters of the transfer market in an attempt to sell the players they no longer want, whilst bringing in crucial new signings to bolster a squad that struggled to compete for a top-four finish last season.
There will also be the added pressure of Chelsea’s need to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) and Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), with Sky Sports recently reporting that the London club are one of a handful of English top-flight clubs that will be forced to sell a number of players before the June 30 deadline or risk having their summer spending spree seriously curtailed. Luckily for the club, Chelsea’s squad is packed full of unwanted stars that could be sold for sizable sums in the coming weeks.
Kepa, Maatsen and Chalobah? Chelsea defenders for sale
Despite the departure of Thiago Silva, following his retirement from football at the end of the previous season, Chelsea are still pretty well stocked in defence and could afford to sell a handful of squad players. The most obvious one is none other than Ian Maatsen, who has spent the season on loan at Borussia Dortmund. Marseca already has two senior left-backs in Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell and with a market value of €40 million, Maatsen would be a smart player to sell on if he’s deemed surplus to requirement. Equally, this summer now seems like the ideal time to move on back-up players like Trevoh Chalobah (€13m) and Malang Sarr (€4m), while former first-choice goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (€12m) should also fetch a decent price in the transfer market.
Santos, Casadei and Gallagher? Chelsea midfielders for sale
Although there’s a solid chance he’ll end up starting for England at this summer’s Euros, reports in England continue to suggest that Chelsea are still leaning towards the potential sale of midfielder Conor Gallagher (€50m). Although the 24-year-old talent was one of Mauricio Pochettino’s most-used players last season, his status as a former youth academy graduate would mean that any transfer fee could be logged as pure profit for Chelsea in the transfer window. As such, a decent offer for Gallagher may be too good for Chelsea to turn down this summer. Although he isn’t the only midfielder that may be sold. Andrey Santos (€15m) should fetch a decent price in the market as a young, talented player and in equal measure 21-year-old talent Cesare Casadei (€10m) may also be sold if the right offer were to come in for his services.
Lukaku, Broja and Ziyech? Chelsea forwards for sale
Perhaps the most profitable part of Chelsea’s squad is up front. The club have spent untold fortunes on attacking players in recent years, but still have a number of players from previous eras at the club on their books. The best example of this is none other than Romelu Lukaku (€30m), who has spent a number of years on loan at other clubs but should be sold by the club this summer. Similarly, first-team players that didn’t quite live up to the billing or have perhaps been overlooked for new arrivals, such as Raheem Sterling (€35m) and Armando Broja (€22m), could also leave the club if decent offers were presented. David Datro Fofana (€12m) has also struggled to cement a spot in Chelsea’s first team and will likely find a viable suitor in the Premier League this summer for his services.
