It’s been a bitterly disappointing season for Manchester City after surrendering their Premier League crown but Omar Marmoush has provided a silver lining. Eyebrows were raised when Pep Guardiola spent €75 million to make the Egyptian the fifth most expensive January signing in history. Marmosuh exploded onto the scene after an outstanding Bundesliga campaign with 25 goal contributions in 17 games for Frankfurt. The 26-year-old joined Frankfurt on a free transfer from Wolfsburg in 2023 but he departed for an eye-watering profit just 18 months later. There was considerable scepticism over City’s decision to invest so much into Marmoush, given he’d only enjoyed a fantastic six months in his career but he looks an inspired signing.
Only countryman Mohamed Salah (7) has scored more than Marmoush (6) in the league since his arrival and Guardiola was effusive in praise for his impact after netting in the 5-2 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday. “The numbers are really, really good,” said Guardiola. “When a player arrives mid-season and everything is fine it’s easy to adapt, but to come and have an impact when the team is not playing well. That is a big credit.” Marmoush has adapted to the demands of English football impressively but which January signings have scored the most goals across the remainder of the season in Premier League history? Let’s find out.
Papiss Cissé joined Newcastle United from Freiberg in January 2012 and he scored 13 goals in 14 games across the remainder of the 2011/12 season. Cisse formed an iconic partnership with Demba Ba and the Sengal international famously scored a brace against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a 2-0 win during his first six months in England. Andy Cole and Tony Yeboah rank joint-second with 12 goals in 18 games, although Cole already has experience in the Premier League after joining Manchester United from Newcastle.
As the graphic above illustrates, the former England international features twice in the top ten list as he netted nine goals in 15 games after moving to Blackburn from Man United in January 2002. Daniel Sturridge and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang complete the top five with the former Arsenal striker netting ten goals in one less game. Marmoush ranks 23rd alongside 12 other players to score six goals but he will move into the top ten list, if he can find net three more times over City’s final six league games this season.
