The March international break is now upon us, with nations meeting up before the club season’s run-in in Europe’s top leagues gets underway. It’s a slightly more exciting break than usual too, with the 2026 World Cup qualifiers beginning, and Thomas Tuchel set to take charge of England for the first time vs Albania and Latvia at Wembley. But which nations have been making the most of these international breaks in recent years?
All countries will play over this next week, and here at Transfermarkt, we have calculated the nations with the most wins in the 2020s so far. Some recent trophy winners feature near the top, whilst some historically top nations have had a tough decade to date. Nations with the same amount of wins have been ranked by the teams to have played less games going higher.
Leading the way is unsurprisingly the most successful nation in terms of trophies in the 2020s in Argentina with 50 wins from 62 games. After going 18 years without winning a major international trophy, they have been faultless so far this decade, winning the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa América. The talk of Lionel Messi not doing it with his nation has been muted, as the great has now won it all in his twilight years. No other nation can match Argentina’s wins in the 2020s to date.
In second place is Morocco with 49 wins from 68 matches. The northern African side became the first from their continent to get to a World Cup semi-final in 2022, where they were eventually beaten by France. In third place is USA with 45 wins from 76 matches in the 2020s. Although they have disappointed in major tournaments this decade. Fourth place goes Euro 2024 champions Spain with 44 wins in 66 games. Completing the top five are the first Asian side on the list in Japan with 43 wins in 60 matches.
In sixth position come Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal with 43 wins from 64 games. Although they have failed to get past the quarter-final stage in all three of the latest major tournaments. They are followed by Algeria in seventh with 43 wins from 65 matches. Euro 2024 runners-up England take eighth with 43 wins from 67 matches. Ninth sees Mexico claim the position with 42 wins in a crazy 82 games played this decade already. Completing the top 10 is Senegal with 41 wins from 59 games.
