Unwanted stars?

The new Premier League season is well and truly underway and while the first handful of fixtures are tremendous yardsticks for which teams will thrive and which ones will struggle in the English top-flight this time around, they can also point us towards what kind of business we can expect before the end of the summer transfer window. With just under two weeks left to go of the current window, many Premier League clubs will be looking to sell their unwanted stars that are burning a hole through the club’s wage bill and could earn them some much-needed profits in the transfer market. So which top-flight stars look the most likely to move on before August 31?

To no great surprise, the vast majority of the most likely big sales in the Premier League before the transfer window shuts will almost certainly come from Chelsea. The Stamford Bridge club have so far spent €189 million on new signings and are expected to bring in even more new players before the end of the month. The London club have also earned an impressive €103m from selling or releasing seven first team players this summer, but their opening-day defeat to Manchester City certainly suggests more star players could be heading for the exit door. For example, both Noni Madueke and Mykhaylo Mudryk were unused substitutes in the game, while Raheem Sterling was omitted entirely from the first-team squad for the fixture. When we couple that with the fact that Ben Chilwell, Reece James and Conor Gallagher have all been heavily linked with a departure from the club this summer, it adds up to a remarkable €216m worth of talent that could be leaving Chelsea in the next 10 days.

Of course, Chelsea aren’t the only major English club that could look to sell unwanted stars in the next two weeks. Arsenal’s first fixture of the season saw them beat Wolves 2-0 but did so without Polish defender Jakub Kiwior (market value: €30m) in the matchday squad. There’s every chance that the 24-year-old defender will be sold this summer, alongside striker Eddie Nketiah (€30m) who has also been heavily linked with a departure from the club. Similarly, Manchester United have two unwanted forward players in Jadon Sancho (€30m) and Antony (€30m) who played no part in their win over Fulham and at Liverpool new manager Arne Slot opted to keep Curtis Jones (€35m) on the bench and left central defender Joe Gomez (€28m) out of his matchday squad entirely. However, bigger sales may be found at Manchester City, where Pep Guardiola continues to overlook last summer’s panic buy Matheus Nunes (€50m) in favour of other central midfielders, while new signing Savinho seems to have already overtaken Jack Grealish (€60m) in the first team pecking order, leading to some serious question marks over the England international’s prospect of game time this season. Should the English champions need to make some sales before the end of the window, the aforementioned pair are the most likely candidates.
