138 players updated

Downgrades rather than upgrades dominate the Transfermarkt market value update of the Dutch Eredivisie. Altogether, 138 players playing in the Dutch first division were updated, and the four most valuable players all received a downgrade. Still at the very top of the ranking remains PSV Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko (-€5m to €35m), followed by Feyenoord’s Dávid Hancko (-€3m to €32m), Bakayoko’s teammate Joey Veerman (-€4m to €28m) and Ajax striker Brian Brobbey (-€3m to €27m).
“PSV collapsed after the winter, and that shows in the dropped values,” Transfermarkt Area Manager Netherlands Jesper Siereveld said. “Bakayoko has been mediocre all season and isn’t a nailed starter anymore, especially since Perisic is on hot form.” PSV’s poor form also had an impact on Veerman. “For Joey Veerman, it is a repeating story,” Siereveld said. “In the league, he’s one of (if not) the best passer(s), but on the big stage like the UCL or Euros, his defensive weaknesses like tracking back, speed, and decision making kill him.”
Bakayoko and Veerman aren’t the only PSV stars impacted by the club’s poor form. Midfielder Jerdy Schouten saw his market value drop by €7m from €32m to just €25m. As a result, the 28-year-old is no longer listed among the five most valuable players in the Dutch Eredivisie. “Schouten hasn’t been the same player ever since his injury,” Siereveld said.
Meanwhile, star striker Brobbey has also seen his market value drop at Ajax. “Brobbey had an awful first half of the season,” Siereveld said. “But in the last weeks, he started scoring, including the match against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League, and his form has improved.” The return to a better form has likely rescued Brobbey from an even bigger drop in market value. “It is only €3m,” Siereveld said. “Although his statistics are still abysmal for an Ajax striker. But a bid by West Ham last winter highlighted that there is still a strong market for him.”
The news isn’t all bad in the Eredivisie. Although Hancko’s market value dropped, in Igor Paixão (+€8m to €25m) and Givairo Read (+€8m), two Feyenoord stars are among the biggest winners of the Eredivisie market value update. “The two are absolute key players for Feyenoord,” Siereveld said. “Both in the Dutch league and the Champions League. Also, they have been linked with some foreign teams. Paixão with Napoli and Read with Barcelona and Liverpool. Especially Read has a bright future before him; therefore, he makes a big step in value this update.”
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
