After updates in MLS and Brazil, Argentina’s Liga Profesional is the next major league in the Americas in line for an intermediary market value update. Overall, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 138 players in the Argentine first division. Unchanged at the very top remains Man City-bound Claudio Echeverri. The two players following in second place, Echeverri’s River Plate teammate Franco Mastantuono and Boca Juniors Cristian Media, received 30% upgrades to their market values.
“Together with Echeverri, Mastantuono is the most promising player in Argentina,” Transfermarkt Area Manager South America and Argentina Scott Christensen said. “He’s already been linked quite strongly with Real Madrid, and I’m quite confident that if it’s not Real Madrid, he’ll end up playing in a top European club anyway.” The left-footed midfielder stood out with his vision and good dribbling skills. Only 17, Mastantuono has managed three goals and two assists in 30 games across all competitions this season. With significant European interest in mind, Mastantuono saw his market value increase by €3m to now €13m.
Another player on the verge of heading to Europe was Boca’s Medina. The midfielder was on the verge of joining Turkish side Fenerbahçe, but the deal collapsed. “Fenerbahçe was willing to pay $15m, but with the market in Argentina closing, his release clause increased to $20m, and the Turkish club walked away from negotiations,” Christensen said. “It has been reported that Fenerbahçe are in advanced talks to sign him this winter for $15m, and with that in mind, we increased his market value.” Described as a creative player and a playmaker, Medina is certainly one to watch.
Going up by an astonishing 166.7% is Boca defender Aarón Anselmino. But unlike Medina and Mastantuono, the 19-year-old Boca Juniors center-back has already secured his move to Europe. The center-back is set to join Chelsea in a deal worth €20m in June 2025. “This is probably the first time in history that Argentina has been exporting center-backs at a regular basis,” Christensen said. “Cuti Romero and Lisandro Martínez clearly have opened up the market. Although he hasn’t played much, and when he played, he wasn’t outstanding, Anselmino is now next in line regardless. Anselmino’s increase in market value is mainly an adjustment to the significant transfer fee paid by Chelsea.”
It might only be a matter of time before Thiago Fernández will appear in the rumor mills on Transfermarkt. “The last three to four months were really outstanding,” Christensen said about the Vélez Sarsfield winger. Fernández has had an outstanding stretch of games, scoring four goals and five assists in his last ten league games. “He’s fast and unpredictable,” Christensen said. “Vélez is known for creating talents, and in my opinion, Thiago Fernández is one of their biggest prospects.” As a result, Fernández saw his market value increase 177.8% to now €5m.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
