‘Who put the ball in the Mackems net, Alexander Isak‘ was once again ringing around St James’ Park on Wednesday night. And the truth is the Swedish striker is putting the ball in every opponent’s net of late. His brace in a 3-0 win against Wolves took Newcastle into the top four, surpassing Chelsea. The Toon have now won nine games in-a-row in all competitions – not only have they shot up the Premier League table, but they are into the fourth round of the FA Cup, and have one foot in the EFL Cup final, after winning their semi-final first-leg 2-0 at the Emirates.
The upturn in form from Eddie Howe’s team has been spearheaded by their superstar striker Isak. The Swede has been in electric form, scoring 11 goals in his last eight Premier League games. What makes that prolific run all the more special, is that in that streak, there hasn’t been a single game in which Isak hasn’t found the back of net. Eight games in-a-row of scoring leaves Isak chasing down the Premier League record of 11 games, but which other stars have gone on superb scoring runs in the Premier League down the years? You can swipe through the best records below.
Avid football fans may remember the current record holder. Back in Leicester’s sensational title-winning season in 2015/16, one of the main protagonists of their heroic story, Jamie Vardy scored in 11 games in-a-row between August and November, scoring 13 goals in the process. He broke the record with his strike in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at the King Power, eclipsing the previous record holder who was a former player at Old Trafford. That brings us to second place, which goes to former Red Devil Ruud Van Nistelrooy. The Dutchman scored in 10 games in-a-row in 2003, notching an incredible 15 times on that run. In joint-third now comes Isak, with the Swede having scored in eight games in-a-row for the Magpies.
Three other players have managed Premier League scoring streaks of eight games in-a-row, and remarkably two of them have already featured on our list. Both Vardy and Van Nistelrooy have managed separate eight-game goalscoring streaks. Vardy’s eight-game run came in 2019, in which the Englishmen won the Premier League golden boot that season. Van Nistelrooy’s eight-game streak was between 2001 and 2002 for Manchester United. He was also the golden boot winner that campaign. The only other player to achieve an eight-game streak was Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge back in the 2013/14 season.
One would feel Isak can certainly realistically set his sights on going on to equal if not surpass Vardy’s record. As illustrated above, Newcastle’s next three fixtures are at home to Bournemouth, away to bottom-placed Southampton, and at home to Fulham. In the form he is in, those defences will have their work cut out trying to stop Isak finding the net. If he was to net in all three of those fixtures, where else better to beat the record than at the home of the champions Manchester City.
