©TM/IMAGO

It’s been a brilliant year of football and some players have really stood out across 2024. A plethora of young players have emerged as generational talents, while some experienced stars have cemented their reputation as the best players in the world.

Lamine Yamal truly emerged as one of the best players in the world with his Barcelona excellence backed up by leading Spain to glory at 2024. We’ve analysed Transfermarkt’s famed market value data to see which players enjoyed the biggest valuation upgrades across the calendar year – from the top five leagues – and Yamal ranks first. As the graphic below illustrates, Yamal’s market value soared by €120 million across 2024 from €60m to €180m and he’s currently the most valuable teenager in history.

Cole Palmer’s move from Manchester City to Chelsea left Pep Guardiola regretting his decision and the England international ranks second with his valuation increasing by €85m in 2024. The top five places are all held by LaLiga or Premier League stars- Pau CubarsíVinicius Jr and Kobbie Mainoo. Two Bundesliga stars feature in the top ten in Omar Marmoush and Florian Wirtz, while Kenan Yildiz is the only player from Serie A.

Championship market values: Championship market values: Jobe Bellingham becomes joint MVP, Borja Sainz biggest winner

This Monday December 30, Transfermarkt has adjusted the market values of a number of players in the English Championship. Remarkably, the English second-flight is the sixth most valuable league in world football, only behind Liga Portugal and Europe’s top-five leagues. It’s a division brimming with talent, as teams battle it out for a place in the Premier League and this winter, among the biggest winners of the Championship market value update were Sunderland teenager Jobe Bellingham, and the league’s top goalscorer Borja SainzSunderland and Sheffield United rose the most in squad market value, whilst Burnley suffered the biggest downgrade in squad value.

Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham becomes Championship joint MVP

Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham, who has a market value of €180m, isn’t the only emerging star from the family, with his younger brother – Sunderland’s 19-year-old midfielder Jobe Bellingham rising by +€6m in this latest Championship market value update to become the joint most valuable player in the league at a new value of €18m. The young Englishman has three goals and three assists in 18 league games so far this season for the Black Cats, and has been linked with a January move to both Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid.

Bellingham goes level with Burnley keeper James Trafford, Sheffield United defender Anel Ahmedhodzic, and Leeds winger Wilfried Gnonto – all now worth €18m. Whilst Leeds keeper Illan Meslier drops by -€2m from €18m to €16m. Bellingham wasn’t the only Sunderland star on the rise. The Black Cats are currently fourth in the Championship, just two points off the top two. Their squad value rose by +€16.25m to a €116.58m, with 17-year-old Chris Rigg (+€3m to €12m), right-back Trai Hume (+1.5m to €8.5m), left-back Dennis Cirkin (+€4m to €6m), and winger Romaine Mundle (+€2.5m to €4.5m) among the club’s biggest winners.

Top scorer Borja Sainz league’s biggest winner up 445%

Spanish forward Sainz has exploded for Norwich this season. The 23 year old was signed from Turkish side Giresunspor for just €2.2m in July 2023, and after a mediocre first campaign for the Canaries, he has 15 goals in 21 Championship games so far this season. The next highest scorer in the league is West Brom’s Josh Maja with 10. Sainz held a market value of just €2.2m prior the update but now rises by 445% to €12m, making him the joint 15th most valuable player in the division.

Market Value

The next biggest winners from the update were Bellingham (+€6m to €18m), Sheffield United keeper Michael Cooper (+€5m to €7m), Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath (+€4m to €10m), Boro midfielder Finn Azaz (+€4m to €9m), Cirkin (+€4m to €6m), Maja (+€3.8m to €7m), and Harrison Burrows (+€3.8m to €7m). The biggest losers from the update were Burnley striker Lyle Foster (-€4m to €9m), Luton’s Carlton Morris (-€3m to €8m) and Leeds trio, Meslier (-€2m to €16m), Manor Salomon (-€2m to €9m), and Maximilian Wöber (-€2m to €8m).

Burnley remain second most valuable club despite biggest loss

Despite receiving a -€10.65m downgrade (the biggest in the division) Burnley only move down one place in the list of the most valuable squads in the Championship with their new €176.85m squad value. Now laying claim to the most valuable squad in the league are Leeds (€177m) with Sunderland (€116.58m) now in third place. The Black Cats (+€16.25m) and Sheffield United (+€15.75m) were the biggest winners from this latest December update.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).

LaLiga market values: Lamine Yamal in the top 3 - Kylian Mbappé drops by 11.1%

©TM/IMAGO

With the holiday season in full swing, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 504 LaLiga players. After updating the market values of the other top four leagues earlier this month, the Spanish top flight became the last top division in 2024 to receive new market values. While Vinicius Junior remains at the top with a market value of €200m, Real Madrid’s top signing Kylian Mbappé saw his market value drop.

LaLiga: All new market values at a glance

“Mbappé’s transfer came with massive expectations that he couldn’t fulfill,” market value coordinator Spain Tobias Blaseio said. “For a player of his format, the expectation was that he would get used to his new environment more quickly. While his numbers aren’t bad, there is a feeling that he lacks confidence and looks generally unhappy. It is obvious that he isn’t fulfilling his massive potential.” With that in mind, Mbappé saw his market value drop by 11.1% from €180m to €160m and is no longer among the top three most valuable players. But there is also a sense that this might be only temporary. “He has everything you need to return to the top,” Blaseio added.

Market Value

Indeed, Mbappé isn’t the only player struggling at Real Madrid. Rodrygo (-€10m to €100m), Aurélien Tchouaméni (-€20m to €80m), Éder Militão and Endrick (both -€20m to €60m) are among the other top players with downgrades. “Real Madrid have one of the smallest squads in LaLiga, and the average age of the squad is almost three years older than that of rivals Barcelona,” Blaseio said. “The squad planning could have been better, and you can expect a correction in January, especially as the squad has really struggled with the heavy workload.” This has been especially evident in the Champions League, where the results have been disappointing.

LaLiga market values: Yamal up by €30m – Raphinha continues to impress

The main star at Barcelona remains 17-year-old Lamine Yamal. “It is hard to find the right words for his career thus far,” Blaseio said. “The leadership role he has taken on as a 17-year-old at both the national team and Barcelona is indescribable. The jump in quality is evident whenever he is on the pitch for his team. It doesn’t even make sense to compare him with previous world stars because his stats are one of a kind for a player of his age. It will be exciting to see how he will deal with the pressure in the long term.” Either way, his market value increased by another €30m to now €180m, enough to be ranked among Spain’s three most valuable players.

Market Value

One player who has undoubtedly benefited from playing with Yamal is Brazilian winger Raphinha. “The Brazilian is one of the players with excellent form in the first half of the season,” Blaseio said. “His incredible performances in the Champions League—the hattrick against Bayern stood out—and in LaLiga have improved his status within the club and the national team.” His market value is up by €20m from €60m to €80m. How high could it go? “He is 28, and because of his age, reaching the €100m benchmark might be difficult to achieve.”

Age isn’t an issue for talented Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi. “The 17-year-old has now played a full season on the biggest stage and underlined that he has the qualities to continue this level long-term,” Blaseio said. At this stage, imagining Barcelona and Spain without the young center-back in the starting XI is impossible. “His above-average buildup play, defensive one-on-one abilities, and high-risk play in the high press make him a player who fulfills many of the key requirements of a modern defender. To play the position at this age is both spectacular and impressive.” With a market value increase of €30m to now €70m, Cubarsi is now among the ten most valuable center-backs in the world

LaLiga market values: Aramburu at Real Sociedad and Boyomo at Osasuna stand out

Away from the big two, 22-year-old center-back Jon Aramburu has been playing a fantastic season for Real Sociedad. “The right-back has become a permanent fixture in the first team,” Blaseio said. “He stood out for Venezuela at the Copa America last summer and managed to take that momentum into the new season.” Since that tournament, Aramburu has been scouted by some of Europe’s biggest teams, and that interest has only increased after a strong start to the season. “His ability to play center-back in a back-three and also as a left-back makes him a hot commodity,” Blaseio added. As a result, the Venezuelan defender sees his market value increase by 140% from €5m to €12m.

Market Value

Not quite as much of an increase, but still an impressive jump by 100% from €10m to €20m experienced Enzo Boyomo. “Osasuna’s Cameroonian defender has caught the eye of many top clubs,” Blaseio said. “Signed for just €5m from Valladolid last summer, the transfer now looks like a steal. He has missed just 90 minutes this season and was rewarded with a debut for Cameroon’s national team. Boyomo’s contract runs until 2029 and includes an exit clause of just €25m. English clubs have already shown interest, especially Aston Villa, coached by Spanish manager Unai Emery.”

The transfer market remains closed until January but clubs are still extremely busy behind the scenes as they plan for future arrivals. There’s now just a few days until the winter window opens and clubs are already working tirelessly behind the scenes on identifying targets to sign or loan.

Managers will be constantly assessing their squads with sporting directors and recruitment staff scanning the market for potential deals in the upcoming market. A plethora of players will be unhappy with their lack of minutes with their agents aiming to secure them a move to ensure first-team football for the second half of the season. The rumour mill is beginning to pick up pace and we’ve collated some of the biggest current transfer stories.

Monaco attacker Maghnes Akliouche is reportedly attracting interest from a host of top European clubs ahead of the January window. Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, PSG, Inter Milan and Newcastle United have all been linked with the 22-year-old.

Alphonso Davies’ contract at Bayern Munich expires at the end of the season and the Canadian international is open  to a move to the Premier League. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all hold an interest in the left-back.

Maxim De Cuyper is enjoying a brilliant season with Club Brugge with Premier League giants Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham all monitoring his development. Meanwhile, PSG are interested in Aston Villa star Jhon Durán, according to reports in Spain.

As the year 2024 draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on what has been a thrilling year of football. From Bayer Leverkusen upsetting the apple cart and winning the Bundesliga unbeaten, to Manchester City lifting a historical fourth Premier League title in-a-row. From Spain clinching the Euro 2024 title, to Real Madrid winning a 15th Champions League, it’s been a stellar year of the beautiful game. But from all the twists, turns and drama, which players have been the most popular? Who have you been searching for? At Transfermarkt, we have calculated the 30 player profiles with the most views across 2024 on all English-speaking domains, with some star names and exciting young talents leading the way. The list can be scrolled through below.

Leading the way is none other than 39-year-old superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. It hasn’t been the best year on the pitch for the legendary forward. He crashed out of Euro 2024 with Portugal without scoring a goal, although he has still been prolific in the Saudi Pro League. Nevertheless, football fans continue to search for him and flock to the legend’s player profile. In second place is another icon of the game in 37-year-old Lionel Messi. The third most viewed player profile of 2024 was none other than Kylian Mbappé – no doubt enhanced by his big summer move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. In fourth was Englishman Jude Bellingham after a terrific year with club and country, and completing the top five was Manchester City goal-machine Erling Haaland.

There’s little doubt that 2024 has been an extremely eventful year in the world of football and here at Transfermarkt we have strived to cover the biggest and most interesting stories for our global audience. Whether it be market value updates of smaller divisions in every region of the world, or match reports from Wembley Stadium at the Champions League final, few websites can lay claim to the breadth and depth of coverage that our website provides hundreds of millions of users and readers each and every year. And now that 2024 is all but done, this week seems like a fitting opportunity to look back at some of the biggest stories from the last 12 months. So without further ado, here are the top 10 most read articles on Transfermarkt’s English domains over the course of 2024. To read any of the articles, be sure to click on the image underneath the headline.

10. Bayer Leverkusen hold Europe’s longest unbeaten run since 2000

(published May 22)

Longest unbeaten runs

Kicking off the list was perhaps the biggest story in European football last season, as Bayer Leverkusen threw off the shackles of their old nickname “Never-kusen” and marched to their first ever Bundesliga title. To do that, Xabi Alonso’s side went unbeaten across the entire league season in Germany and ahead of their Europa League final against Serie A side Atalanta Tranfermarkt took a look at what made the German team so formidable and compared their unbeaten run to some of the very best in European football.

9. The Premier League’s current longest serving players at one club

(published August 21)

Longest serving PL spotlight

In ninth place on the list of the most read articles on our website was a countdown of the players that have played the most minutes in the Premier League for a single club. Once upon a time the concept of a “one-club player” was pretty common in English football, but the idea has lost much of its appeal in the modern era as lucrative transfer fees and sign-on bonuses have led to more and more players moving from one club to the next. As such, our article in August brought up a number of interesting names. Be sure to take a look a the list and see for yourself.

8. Top 50 highest average attendances in Europe 2023/24

(published May 30)

Attendances spotlight

The 2023/24 season threw up plenty of drama across Europe, and fans loved it. Bayer Leverkusen romped to a surprise Bundesliga title, whilst Manchester City made history by winning four Premier League titles in-a-row. Real Madrid lifted a 36th La Liga, Inter Milan cruised to the Serie A title, and PSG made it nine titles from 11 seasons in France. But which clubs’ supporters turned out in the best numbers across the campaign? In May, Transfermarkt put together a list of the top 50 clubs with the highest average attendances across the whole of Europe in league games last season, and there were some very surprising results. Two clubs who are playing outside of their countries top-flight even make the top 20.

7. Which clubs have the most players and the highest combined market value at Euro 2024?

(published June 10)

Euro 2024 clubs spotlight

Ahead of what turned out to be a fascinating and extremely dramatic Euro 2024, Transfermarkt broke down the market values of each player at the tournament to decipher which clubs had the most valuable players at the tournament and which ones had the biggest contingent of players playing across the many nations on show. Naturally, big stars like Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham were two of the biggest names at the competition but, rather curiously, neither player played for the one club that had more representatives at the tournament than any other side.

6. Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappé – the top ten highest paid players in the world

(published October 17)

Mbappe, Messi and Ronaldo

Each year Forbes magazine publish their list of the top 10 highest paid players across the world’s most popular sport and to no great surprise former Manchester United and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo remains on top. But which global stars are working hard to keep up with the 39-year-old talisman? In August, Transfermarkt broke down the top 10 and took a look at which players were rising and falling on the rankings, when it came to club salaries and big endorsement deals.

5. Top 15 players with most hat-tricks in their careers

(published August 27)

Hattys spot

2024 was undoubtedly another remarkable year for Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, as he continued to score goals at an ever-increasing pace for the Premier League giants. With goals often come hat-tricks and following the towering striker’s three goals against Ipswich at the start of the year, Transfermarkt took a look at Haaland’s record to date and compared it to some of the sports greatest ever goal scorers. The Norwegian talent may not be no.1 on the list, but he’s certainly gaining on some of the biggest names in football.

4. Is Saudi Pro League over-spending a myth? Transfer fees far lower than most fans realise

(published June 26)

Saudi Spending

Saudi Pro League (SPL) clubs are widely perceived as spending lavishly on transfers, which provides an avenue for European clubs to offload unwanted assets – but how accurate is that narrative? The SPL skyrocketed in prominence after Cristiano Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in December 2022 with the Portuguese superstar the figurehead for a new era, but our deep dive into the spending of the Middle Eastern top-flight questioned whether Saudi football was ready to dominate the transfer market quite as much as reports in Europe had and continue to suggest.

3. Man United 5th & Bayern Munich 15th – highest transfer net spends this summer

(published September 3)

Nt spend

Billions were spent by clubs across the world on new signings this summer, with Julián Alvarez’s €75 million move from Manchester City to Atlético Madrid the most expensive deal. No less than 15 deals were completed for fees of €50m or higher including Manuel Ugarte to Manchester United, Michael Olise to Bayern Munich and Pedro Neto to Chelsea. The ability for clubs to spend is increasingly determined by their ability to recoup money in sales due to financial fair play rules but which clubs had the highest net spends this summer? Shortly after the summer transfer window closes, Transfermarkt pulled out their calculator and figured it out.

2. Paris 2nd, Manchester 8th – which cities produce the best footballers in the world?

(published April 3)

Cities spot

With international football playing such a big part in the narrative surrounding football in 2024, questions over which countries produced the best players were at the forefront of most football fans’ minds this year. In April, Transfermarkt went one step further and using its huge database was able to identify which cities across the world could lay claim to producing most of the top-class talents in the sport today, as well as ranking the top 10 cities by their overall combined market value of homegrown players.

1. The most valuable pairs of brothers currently playing in the sport today

(published October 15)

Brothers spotlight

For some families, producing just one son who becomes a professional footballer isn’t enough. Down the years there have been numerous occasions where sets of brothers have made it pro and showcased their talents to the world. Perhaps it’s the competitive nature of competing with your brother that spurs them on. Perhaps just being in and around a footballing family from such a young age. But who are the most valuable pairs of brothers currently playing? This year, Transfermarkt compiled a list of the top 30 most valuable pairs, and it made for some fascinating reading. Many top players you may not have even realised had a brother who is a footballer crop up on the list. Four pairs even accumulate a combined market value of €100 million or more.

Mustafa Hekimoğlu: Besiktas wonderkid wants to be the next Robert Lewandowski

Talents Calendar

Mustafa Hekimoğlu: Besiktas wonderkid wants to be the next Robert Lewandowski

©TM/IMAGO

Mustafa Hekimoğlu, who has managed to make the jump from Besiktas JK’s academy to the first team, is considered one of the biggest talents in Turkish football. After already developing Rıdvan Yılmaz, Emirhan İlkhan, Serdar Saatçı, Semih Kılıçsoy, and now Hekimoğlu, Besiktas highlights that they have great potential within the club. Some believe the 17-year-old forward can fill the void in the national team that Burak Yılmaz left behind when he retired in 2023.

Market Value

His first appearance at the big stage came for Hekimoğlu at the Supercup in August. In that game, Besiktas smashed Galatasaray 5-0. Hekimoğlu would score in that game first beating out defender Kaan Ayhan and then slotting the ball past Fernando Muslera to make it 5-0. He was only brought on a few minutes earlier for Ciro Immobile. Since then, Hekimoğlu was given a few more opportunities with the first team.

The only obstacle has been Besiktas’ poor performances both domestically and in Europe. Besiktas are 28th in the Europa League, and in the Süper Lig, the 16-time champions are only sixth. That’s one of the main reasons why Hekimoğlu has played just 231 minutes this season and is often only the third choice. Ahead of him in the pecking order are Immobile and Kılıçsoy. Despite that, many people in Türkiye are excited about the 17-year-old’s potential.

When playing for Türkiye’s youth teams, Hekimoğlu has been a reliable striker. Since September, he has represented the U21 and has scored once in three games. His best qualities are those of a striker, but he is also flexible and can play on both wings. Even though he is still very young, Hekimoğlu is quite physical and strong in duels. On top of that, his ball control and finishing are his best qualities.

Reading the game and positioning are his most significant weaknesses. Hekimoğlu also still struggles to use his physical strength against Süper Lig defenders the same way he did when he played for youth teams. On top of that, he still has to work on his tempo and agility. “Mustafa Hekimoğlu is definitely one of the most talented players,” Area Manager Türkiye Gökhan Yağmur said. “He has great qualities but hasn’t quite reached the level that many experts and fans want to see.

As part of the Süper Lig market value update, Hekimoğlu’s market value increased by €500,000 to now €2.5m. The speed at which his market value will continue to increase will depend on the amount of time he will play for Besiktas and whether he can meet the high expectations placed on him. The Guardian crowned him in October as one of the 60 biggest talents born in 2007. Premier League and Ligue 1 teams are interested in the striker.

On the international stage, Hekimoğlu had his first great moment in September 2024. In the match against Ajax, former Besiktas coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst opted to start him. Aged 17 and 157 days, Hekimoğlu is the youngest player to start for Besiktas in the Europa League. Besiktas, however, lost that game 4-0. “I will never forget the game at Ajax,” Hekimoğlu said to Playspor after the game. “It was an exciting and beautiful game but with a poor result. We felt bad for [Van Bronckhorst], but it was an excellent experience for me.

Van Bronckhorst, who was fired in November, was a big fan of Hekimoğlu. “I was happy with Mustafa’s performances,” Van Bronckhorst said. “He is a player who impresses me despite his young age. Young players like him will be given the time they need. He will improve when he works together in practice with good players.”

Hekimoğlu, in the meantime, has stressed the importance of working together with Immobile. “Sometimes we just practice shots on goal,” Hekimoğlu said. “I try to copy what he is doing in practice.” Like many young players, his role models are Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé and Cristiano Ronaldo. But his favorite player is a Barcelona star. “I like Haaland because he is a physical and fast-forward, but Robert Lewandowski is my idol.” He also has a big career goal. “Real Madrid has been my dream since I was tiny. I would love to wear the Real Madrid jersey, just like Ronaldo.”

From December 1 to 24, we introduce new players from different countries born in 2007 and 2008. Area managers, users, and data scouts come into play as experts throughout the series. You can follow all those players by adding them to your TM watchlist.

Galatasaray, despite a loss of €1.2 million in value, retained its title as the most valuable team in the Süper Lig with a squad market value of €260.85m. Fenerbahçe dropped to €214.85m following a decline of €11.28m, while Beşiktaş fell by €10m to €129m. Trabzonspor experienced a €9m decrease, bringing their value down to €96m. On the other hand, Göztepe, who have drawn attention with their performances this season, increased their value by €4.5m to €40m, while Samsunspor rose by €3m to €31m.

Akgün with biggest increase, Sánchez thriving at Galatasaray

Yunus Akgün, who has had a successful start to the season at Galatasaray, saw his market value rise from €6.5m to €11m, reaching the highest valuation of his career. The forward, a key player for Okan Buruk in both European competitions and the league, nearly doubled his value with a €4.5m increase. If the national team player continues this impressive form, his market value could rise even further by the end of the season. The young talent has contributed 13 goals in 22 matches this season. Another player whose market value increased is Gabriel Sara. The Brazilian midfielder saw his value rise by €3m to €23m, making him the second most valuable player in the Süper Lig after Osimhen. Sara, who is under contract with Galatasaray until 2029, has contributed nine goals in 22 matches this season. With this new valuation, he has reached the highest market value of his career. Another Galatasaray player whose value has risen is Metehan Baltacı. The young player’s value increased by €1.2m, reaching €2.8m.

Meanwhile, defensive leader Davinson Sánchez saw his value rise by €1m, bringing it to €19m. The former Tottenham Hotspur star had to overcome a hamstring injury that ruled him out for two of Galatasaray’s first three league games, but since then he has been a vital cog in a team that has pushed to the top of the league table in the first half of the season as well as going undefeated in their Europa League campaign to date. When we couple that with two goals and an assist in his first 16 appearances, it points to the 28-year-old talent enjoying a strong season with the Turkish club. Sanchez’s new market value makes him the sixth most valuable player and the most valuable defender in the league.

Icardi and Oxlade-Chamberlain lost value after poor start to season

In terms of which players lost the most market value in the most recent update, Fenerbahçe winger Cengiz Ünder comes out on having seen his market value drop from €10m to €7.5m, having once held a market value as high as €35m. Elsewhere at the club,  the market values of Fred and Sebastian Szymański have decreased by €2m each. Fred has lost value due to both his advancing age and his declining performance, while Szymański’s low scoring contribution has contributed to this decrease. Loaned players Allan Saint-Maximin has also lost €1m. It was a similar story at Galatasaray, where Hakim ZiyechMauro Icardi and Victor Nelsson all lost the most market value. While Ziyech and Nelsson’s lack of playing time was effective in their loss of value, Icardi’s market value fell due to his age. All three players saw their market value fall by €2m.

One of the more notable downgrades in market value came to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder saw his market value drop €700k down to just €2.3m, following a difficult start to the season that has seen the 31-year-old player pick up just three appearances and one goal for Besiktas so far in the current league campaign. The player’s new market value now means that Oxlade-Chamberlain’s value is at its lowest level since January 2021, when he was first coming through as a young talent at Southampton and just a few months before he would eventually make the move to North London for a transfer fee of €13.8m.
