Erik ten Hag’s future as Manchester United manager has dominated the column inches this season more than any other story. It’s been a dismal second campaign in England for the 54-year-old and speculation has raged that Sir Jim Radcliffe will appoint a new manager in the summer after acquiring sporting control at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag, however, has been unwavering in his belief that he will remain in the dugout next season and it was recently reported by the Athletic that Radcliffe is leaning towards giving the former Dutch boss another season. United won’t be competing in the Champions League next season and they face a battle to secure a European place with four league games remaining before the FA Cup final against Manchester City. United travel to in-form Crystal Palace tonight before tricky fixtures against Arsenal, Newcastle and Brighton and Ten Hag will be aiming to avoid another unwanted record.
Ten Hag is in danger of leading Man United to their worst ever finish since the Premier League’s inaugural 1992/93 season. United have lost 12 games in the league this season and they’ve only picked up 54 points from their 34 games. As the graphic below illustrates, Ten Hag’s men need to pick up five points from a possible 12 in their four remaining fixtures to avoid matching United’s worst final points tally in Premier League history.
That arrived in the 2021/22 season before Ten Hag’s appointment at Old Trafford. Ole Gunnar Solskjær started the campaign as manager before the Norwegian was sacked and replaced by Ralf Rangnick. United finished 6th that season but their worst ever league placing arrived in the 2013/14 campaign when they finished 7th under the tutelage of David Moyes. United have been decimated by injuries this season but Ten Hag will be desperate to avoid the humiliation of their worst Premier League points total with the Dutchman under considerable pressure.
