21st century globalisation has hit football like all industries in the past few decades, and managers, as well as players, from all across the globe have come to Europe’s top-five leagues to showcase their talents. The Premier League has never been won by an English manager, but been won by bosses from six other different nations (Scotland, France, Portugal, Italy, Spain and Chile). LaLiga has had managers from seven separate nations win the title this century (Spain, Netherlands, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal and Argentina). For Serie A, just three nations since 2000 (Italy, Sweden and Portugal). For the Bundesliga, it’s five (Germany, Spain, Italy, Croatia and Netherlands), whilst it’s for Ligue 1 six managers have won the title (France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Argentina).
However, when it comes to overall points picked up since the year 2000 began, which nation have produced managers that have won the most points in the top-five leagues in the past 25 years? At Transfermarkt, we have measured just that and there are plenty of shocks. Find out which nations have harboured the best managers in Europe’s top divisions below. Interim managers have been included.
Leading the way in first place is Italy. There have been 173 managers this century in the top-five leagues, who have, in total, picked up no less than 25,481 points. The likes of Carlo Ancelotti, Claudio Ranieri, Giovanni Trapattoni and Co have made their mark across Europe’s top leagues. In second place is Spain – 193 managers have won a total of 22,502 points this century, with the likes of Pep Guardiola and Vicente del Bosque shining. Close behind in third is France, with 167 bosses, including Arsène Wenger and Zinédine Zidane winning a grand total 22,340 points. In fourth place is Germany, with 168 managers producing 17,104 points.
In fifth place, someway behind the top four is England with just 7,985 points won from 102 managers since 2000. This damning statistic proves that English managers have been quite the distance behind their counterpart nations in the top-five leagues when it comes to producing the best managers in the dugout this century. The first nation on the list that isn’t a country of one of the top-five leagues is Argentina – 28 Argentinian managers have won 3,542 points. In seventh is Scotland, with 3,523 points won from 30 managers.
In eighth position is Portugal with eight managers, including a heavy contribution by José Mourinho, winning 3,318 points. Ninth position goes to Netherlands, with 25 managers producing 2,794 points since the turn of the century, and completing the top 10 is Switzerland, with 10 Swiss bosses winning a total of 1,557 points. Remarkably Chile are in 13th position with 1,154 points, but every single one of those points has been won by one man – Manuel Pellegrini.
