Liga MX market values: Brandon Vazquez and Sergio Canales drop significantly

Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 496 Liga MX players, and Georgios Giakoumakis remains the most valuable player at the very top. But while the former Atlanta United star remains unchanged with a market value of €9m, another former MLS star, Brandon Vazquez, saw his market value drop as part of the update. 

The former FC Cincinnati forward has struggled this season this season, scoring just three goals and one assist in 16 Apertura fixtures for Monterrey. Signed for $7m (€6.85m) in January, Vazquez never lived up to the high transfer fee and, as a result, has seen his market value decline from €8.5m to €8m earlier this year and now experienced another drop from €8m to €6m. With all that in mind, it isn’t surprising that Vazquez is being linked with a move back to MLS, where the San Jose Earthquakes are interested. 

Meanwhile, at the top, there has been a few new arrivals. Center-backs Víctor Guzmán from Monterrey and Jesús Orozco Chiquete from Chivas are now the joined second most valuable players in Liga MX. The two saw their market values increase by €1.5m and €2m, respectively to €8.5m. Other notable upgrades include Cruz Azul goalkeeper Kevin Mier (+€2m to €8m) and his teammate defensive midfielder Érik Lira (+€1.5m). 

Other than Vazquez, his teammate Sergio Canales has had the most notable downgrade. The former Real Madrid and Real Betis star arrived with a market value of €15m in July 2023 but has seen his value drop to less than half that value since then. As part of this update, Canales saw his market value decline by €500,000 to €7m.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
