489 players updated

Florian Wirtz is the new most valuable player in the Bundesliga. As part of the Transfermarkt Bundesliga update, the Bayer Leverkusen star saw his market value increase to €130m. Overall, 489 Bundesliga players were impacted by the market value update and Wirtz isn’t the only player with a change in the top three. While Jamal Musiala is now second with a market value of €120m, Bayern star striker Harry Kane dropped as part of the update. Beyond the top three, Bayern’s Canadian star Alphonso Davies and English winger Jadon Sancho also stand out. But for very different reasons.
While it has been a year to forget for Bayern, Leverkusen have played an incredible season despite the defeat in the Europa League final to Atalanta (3-0). And Wirtz has very much been the architect of Leverkusen’s success. “After an incredible season, Wirtz guided his team to a double and voted the Bundesliga player of the season,” Bundesliga market value admin Tobias Kröger said. “Wirtz is among the elite talents worldwide and now the most valuable player in the Bundesliga. With 38 goal involvements (18 goals and 20 assists), Wirtz leads all U21 players in Europe.”
The 21-year-old forward isn’t the only Bayer Leverkusen player with a significant upgrade. Edmond Tapsoba, Exequiel Palacios (both +€5m to €45m), Piero Hincapié (+€5m to €40m), and Amine Adli (+€5m to €30m) are notable Bayer Leverkusen players with significant upgrades. Also on the up is Bayern Munich loanee Josip Stanisic. The Munich native, who is set to return to Bayern this summer, made the most of his loan at Leverkusen increasing his market value from €10m to now €28m.
Bundesliga market value update: Kane and Davies headline Bayern downgrades
While Stanisic will return to Munich full of confidence and with a significantly improved market value, several of his new teammates will exit the 2023/24 season with a drop in market value. Among them is Bayern star striker Kane. “Harry Kane was one of the few Bayern players who consistently provided top performances,” Kröger said. “Kane’s downgrade is the result of his age. The Englishman remains the only player over 30 with a market value of €100m, which underlines his status in world football.”
Despite scoring a fantastic goal against Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinal, Alphonso Davies has been anything but consistent. The Canadian left-back has struggled with several smaller injuries and has been mistake-prone when on the pitch. “There has been a clear downward trend regarding Davies,” Kröger said. “Despite that, he remains one of the most valuable wingbacks on the planet. The interest by Real Madrid indicates that there is still some interest for him on the market.” That interest, however, has cooled recently as Real Madrid are reportedly looking to renew the contract with Ferland Mendy instead. Considering that, a market value downgrade from €60m to now €50m seems only consequential.
Davies and Kane aren’t the only players with downgrades at Bayern. Kingsley Coman (-€15m to €50m), Joshua Kimmich (-€10m to €50m), Min-Jae Kim (-€10m to €45m), Dayot Upamecano (-€5m to €45m), and Serge Gnabry (-€5m to €40m) are other notable downgrades. But it hasn’t been all bad at Bayern Munich. Indeed, two top talents that will likely form the spine of the new Bayern Munich received significant upgrades. Musiala is now the second most valuable player in the Bundesliga with a market value of €110m (+€10m), and central midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic, who has been called up to the Germany squad for Euro 2024, saw his market value increase by €5m to €30m.
Dortmund market values: Jadon Sancho benefits from Champions League final
Finally, there is Dortmund and Sancho. After returning on loan from Manchester United, Sancho was a key player in Dortmund’s unlikely run to the Champions League final. “After a catastrophic time at Man United, Sancho is back on track and has shown strong performances over the last few weeks,” Kröger said. “Sancho isn’t quite back at his former level and only receives a small upgrade. But you get the sense that things are going well. Dortmund would like to sign him on a permanent deal this summer.”
Sancho, whose market value rose by 20% to now €30m, isn’t the only Dortmund star to benefit from the Champions League performances. Nico Schlotterback and Ian Maatsen both saw their market value increase by €10m to now €40m. Like Sancho, Dortmund would like to sign Maatsen, who is on loan from Chelsea, on a permanent contract. But the Dutch wing-back has quickly become a hot commodity. Schlotterback, in the meantime, has had a season of highs and lows, but the UCL performances, in particular, warrant an upgrade.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
