Last season, the Championship proved to be one of the most entertaining divisions across Europe, as Leicester, Ipswich, Southampton and Leeds jostled for promotion, with the former three eventually making it back to the Premier League. It may seem like that all only came to a halt a short time ago, but it’s time to strap yourselves in again, as this Friday the new 2024/25 season gets underway, as Blackburn host newly promoted Derby and Preston play recently relegated Sheffield United.
Once again there will be another whole host of talent on show in the English second-flight – highlighted by the fact it is currently the seventh most valuable league in the world with a total market value of €1.48 billion. That’s more than the likes of the Eredivisie (€1.28b) and the Turkish Süper Lig (€1.05b). But which players are contributing the most towards that figure? We have compiled a list of the most valuable players in the Championship this season and there’s some serious talent on show, with Leeds and Burnley players dominating the top 10.
The current most valuable player in the Championship, standing out on his own, is Burnley midfielder Sander Berge, boasting a market value of €20 million. The Norwegian has recently been linked with a move to Manchester United, but if he does stay at Turf Moor, he is likely to be a crucial player for the Clarets in their bid to head straight back to the Premier League. Four players have a market value of €18m, but coming in second due to being youngest at 21 years old is Burnley keeper James Trafford. He’s followed by 22-year-old Leeds forward Georginio Rutter, 24-year-old Leeds keeper Islan Meslier in fourth, and then 25-year-old Sheffield United centre-half Ahmed Ahmedhodzic in fifth.
Leeds continue to exert their dominance on the list in sixth and seventh with 20-year-old Italian winger Wilfried Gnonto and 23-year-old Welsh defender Ethan Ampadu taking those places respectively – both valued at €16m. In eighth is the first loan player on the list – 20-year-old Norwich centre-back Callum Doyle, who is on loan from Manchester City, valued at €15m. Ninth goes to Burnley’s 21-year-old midfielder Aaron Ramsey – also valued at €15m. Completing the top 10 is Sunderland’s 23-year-old winger Jack Clarke at €15m.
