This December, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 434 players in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. Two Club Brugge stars now share the mantle of the league’s most valuable player. 20-year-old South American defender Joel Ordoñez doubles in value from €9 million to €18m, whilst Greek winger Christos Tzolis rises from €12m to €18m. Tzolis was signed by Norwich for €11m back in 2021, whilst Ordoñez is reportedly a January target for Liverpool, Newcastle and Aston Villa. In total, as many as six Club Brugge players rose in market value in this update – they beat Aston Villa 1-0 in this season’s Champions League.
Ordoñez has played 100% of his team’s minutes in the Champions League and league this season, and has been star performer. Tzolis has already made 22 caps for his native Greece by 22 years of age. Bart Tamsyn is Transfermarkt’s Area Manager in Belgium and explained the rise in value for the Club Brugge duo: “Tzolis shows his added value almost every game, whether in the Jupiler Pro League, in the Champions League or with the Greek national team. He scored four goals in the league match against Sint-Truiden, for instance. For club and country combined, he currently sits at 10 goals and 4 assists in 30 games so he is decisive in almost 1 out of 2 games.”
Tamsyn also added the reason’s behind Ordoñez’s rise: “That Ordóñez is also reaching this value may be more surprising to most, but if you look a little deeper into the market, you will see that there is a lot moving around him. Based on the info at our disposal, we think there is a real chance of him moving to a top Premier League side in January for at least €25m.” Club Brugge, who are currently second in the league, rose by +€15.7m in squad value – the most in the entire division. The second biggest rise came for league leaders Genk who went up in squad value by +€14.1m, whilst the biggest fall came for Union SG, whose squad value fell by -€3.7m.
Englishman Archie Brown, who came through at Derby County, rose by +€1m to a new value of €9m – the wing-back has scored one and assisted two in 17 league games this term. Centre-back Luka Vuskovic, who will join Tottenham for an €11m fee next summer, is currently on loan at Belgian side KVC Westerlo, and sees his market value rise by +€2m to €10m. The exciting 17 year old has scored four goals from centre-half in the league this season. “Vuskovic shows game after game the stability in Westerlo’s defence.” said Tamsyn. “He is the player with the third most playing minutes of the team and that while still only 17 years old. He is also over the whole league the defender with the most goals.”
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
